HOW TO PASS AS A LOCAL

No “opa”, please (TIP: watch less mainstream cinema). No need to wear the “fustanella” (the traditional Evzones’ kilt-like skirt) nor sport the “tsarouhi” (the signature red shoe with the black pom-pom). Try practicing some useful Greek words starting with “den ksero ellinika” which means “I don’t speak Greek”. Simply say “yassoo” (“hello”) or “kalimera” (means “goodmorning”). Or just always say “ne, ne, ne” (“yes, yes, yes”) and “ha ha ha” (“ha ha ha”) –after all, “sarkasmos” (“sarcasm”) is a Greek word.

*Nice to know, language lovers!

Some things to say: “mmm, poli nostimo” (“mmm, yummy”), “erhese sihna edo?” (“do you come here often?”), “portokalada” (“orange juice”), “ehis instagram?” (“do you have an instagram account?”), “agapo tin Athina” (“I love Athens”), “thelo na ksenihtiso” (“I want to stay up all night”), “imaste mia orea atmosfaira” (“we are so it”), “pame volta” (“let’s walk around”), “oh, pinasa” (“oops, I am hungry”), “ena, dio, tria” (“one, two, three”), “alpha, beta, gama” (“a, b, c”).
